Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors with your dog, but high temperatures can quickly become dangerous. Dogs don’t sweat like humans, making them much more vulnerable to overheating. Here are ten simple ways to help keep your furry friend safe and comfortable during warm weather.
1. Walk Early or Late
Choose early morning or evening walks when temperatures are lower and pavements have cooled down.
2. Always Carry Fresh Water
Bring a bottle of fresh water and a portable bowl whenever you’re out with your dog. Offer small drinks regularly.
3. Avoid Hot Pavements
Hot tarmac can burn your dog’s paws. Test the ground with the back of your hand for five seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog.
4. Find Shade
Stick to parks, woodland paths and shaded areas whenever possible to keep your dog cooler.
5. Use Cooling Mats
Cooling mats are a great way for dogs to lower their body temperature after a walk or while relaxing at home.
6. Never Leave Your Dog in a Car
Even with the windows open, a parked car can become dangerously hot within minutes. Never leave your dog inside a vehicle on a warm day.
7. Frozen Treats
Freeze dog-friendly treats or stuff a Kong toy with wet food and freeze it for a refreshing snack.
8. Watch for Heatstroke
Heavy panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting or collapse are warning signs. If you notice these symptoms, move your dog somewhere cool and contact your vet immediately.
9. Keep Exercise Gentle
Avoid running, chasing balls or long hikes during hot weather. Shorter, calmer walks are much safer.
10. Know Your Dog’s Limits
Older dogs, puppies, overweight dogs and flat-faced breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs and French Bulldogs are especially sensitive to heat and may need even more care.
